The goal of the blackjack

Blackjack is one of the popular games in land casinos and online casinos in NZ. However, do you know how to play blackjack? Contrary to the popular misconception, the primary objective when playing blackjack is to beat the casino dealer; you do not compete with fellow players.

Blackjack uses the standard deck of 52 cards. The values of each card are as follows:

  • 2 through 10 counts at face value.
  • Face cards (J, Q, and K) has a value of 10 each.
  • Ace has a value of either 1 or 11, depending on your combination.

Blackjack should be a simple game if you follow the guideline below.

Buy chips

In most casinos, you cannot play with hard cash. Therefore, you have to exchange your money with casino chips. Never hand the money to the dealer! Lay your money on the felt of the blackjack table.

The dealer will then spread it out for the camera to see; the pit boss will also verify the amount.

Then, you will be handed the chips equal to the amount you have bought in. Once you have received your chips, you are free to place your stake on the game.

Place a stake

Before the game begins, you must place wagering in the betting circle. The bet limits will be shown on some part of the table. In most instances, the minimum allowable stake is $5 per hand. However, these bet limits vary depending on the casino or the State you are in.

 Dealer deals cards to players

The dealer will deal a card, face-up, to each player starting from left to right. The dealer will then deal one additional card face up to each player and herself included. Each player will now have two cards face up; the dealer will have two cards with only one card face up.

Decide how to play a hand

This is the most crucial part of the game if you want to know how to play blackjack like an experienced player! Of course, in addition to the nature of your cards, the decision you make here will determine your probability of winning. If you manage to deal with a ten-value card and an ace, you have dealt a blackjack!

You will win 1.5× your wagering if the dealer does not have a similar combination. If you do not get a blackjack with your first two cards, you have five options. Dealers will never respond to verbal instructions. You must, therefore, use verbal instructions in combination with the standard signs.

four options in blckjack, hit, stand, split and double win
  • Stand: If you deal with two suitable cards, you can stand the dealers to move on to the next players. Put an open palm on the felt to instruct the dealer.
  • Hit: If you feel your first two cards are not suitable, you can request for more cards to improve your value tally provided you do not go above 21. The standard instruction is tapping the felt with your finger.
  • Double Down: If you have a suitable hand total, but you want to take one more card, you can double your original stake, and you will be dealt with one more card. All you need to do is wager an additional amount equal to the initial stake.
  • Split: This can be used if you land two cards with equal value. You can place a second wager, and the dealer will split the cards; each card will act as the first card on the two new hands. Just put a second wager and give a “peace sign”!
  • Surrender: If you dislike your first cards, you can give up in exchange for half your stake.

Dealer plays hand

Depending on the dealer’s up-card, you can make a choice using the basic casino strategies. When you play your hand using this strategy, there are three possible outcomes:

  • You stood immediately: taking another card will bring the total hand value above 21.
  • You made a hand: You took more cards, either using the hit, double, or split options.
  • Your hand is out of play: You are either busted, or you surrender.

If the dealer is busted, you and every other player on the table will be paid even money, i.e., 1× their initial wager.

If the dealer makes a hand, the person with the highest hand value will win. If you have the same value total as the dealer, you will get back your initial wager.

Special cases

In other instances, the table game will take a different path than the one described above.

These cases include:

  • Insurance/Even Money
  • Non-Insurance Dealer Blackjack
  • Dead hand
  • Side bets

There are some variations in the game of blackjack, rules such as doubling after splitting (DAS), Re-Splitting Aces (RSA), early surrender, 6 to 5 Blackjacks,

CSM Blackjack, single deck vs. multi-deck, and deck penetration will determine the odds as well as the favorability to the player.

Players should, however, never mistake blackjack with other games such as Spanish 21, Free Bet Blackjack, and Blackjack Switch.

If you follow the instructions discussed above, you are good to go!

Now you know how to play blackjack!
